CNL, listening comprehension and oral exams were the hardest part for me too, but you're unfortunate rather than fortunate that you weren't tested in that field, because there's nearly no point in learning a language if you're not going to be able to speak it. Even when I understand that you're talking about your compulsory English studies in the school, so maybe you cared more about passing than about getting useful knowledge.
<p>But nowadays everybody should learn English --and that's a good thing. If spoken English is hard for you I recommend you, aside from travelling to (standard) English-speaking countries --which I myself haven't done--, to watch TV in English. What helped me most during years was BBC World (although it's not free any longer here in Spain since it upgraded to digital signal and it comes via satelite), but you may choose what you like best. I even used to watch Cartoon Network in English, although most cartoon characters speak English which is far from standard. :-P
SLKER
26-08-2006, 00:28:32
Well, if you can write english properly you'll probably be able to have a* conversation with an english guy... they'll understand you, although they'll probably laugh at your pronunciation*xD
<p>I was lucky because I would felt nervous if I would have to do an oral exam. I don't know if I'm good at speaking english, but I prefer not to do that kind of exams, although we read some texts in the class.</p>
<p>I'm going to say what I have said a lot of times... english language should be the official language of all the countries in the world. We can have spanish as the co-official language too, but I think we need to learn english at the same level. </p>
<p>:-P</p>

i hate u cnl xD spanish is the most beautiful language ever!, the only reason why english is .... almost a need, is 'cause USA is taking over the world xD at least in a commercial way.<p>
what else..?... i was going to say something... ah!, the pronunciation, it is ridiculous to pretend that someone could pronounce another language different of their own perfectly, it's just not gonna happen. You'll always talk "weird" to the people that has english as first language. And besides, the important thing about learning it, is to make yourself understood rather than reaching perfection. I learned watching cartoons in english and looking for the translation of the lyrics for the songs that i liked, so i got to a point where i understood what i heard or read, in fact i don't know exactly the grammar, the rules and all that, i just speak or write however it sounds right for me.
rafafreak
26-08-2006, 13:19:57
<p>Echi, good method.</p>
<p>I think the problem (at least, here in Spain) is the english level on schools. I remember my english classes, really bored while listening my teacher giving stupid lessons... pathetic. In fact, I've learned more by playing video-games (reading all parts of the story) and singing songs.</p>
<p>Other reason I think is be used to english idiom since your childhood. It creates the need to learn more and more, getting hypnotized when you hear anything in english. People that didn't have it instiled, now hate it.</p>
46118
27-08-2006, 08:16:47
<p>I don't think English is the universal language because of the USA. It has something to do with it but not everithing. If you think about it for a minute, you would realise that english is one of the easiest languages to learn. On the other hand, Spanish for example is a very difficult one. </p>
<p>*If you want to learn a language for the future.........Chinese would be a great choice. In a few years it'll be a very useful skill which is going to be very important. China is a very powerful country now, and it's growing really fast!. The problem is that Chinese is a very difficult one.......so, it'll be hard to learn it.</p>
<p>I don'k now, I think english is great to express feelings. There are excellent ways in english to express amusement, sadness, happiness, beauty, and so much other things......and with only one sentence you expressed a lot!. In spanish you need to tell a lot*more to give the same idea!.</p>
Kakarot
27-08-2006, 12:41:05
I agree with Echi, I think Spanish is a beautiful language, and... well, I don't think that it's easier to express yourself in English, because Spanish is a really complete language, and you have specific words to say whatever you feel. <br /><br />You think English is more expressive because their words often are shorter than Spanish ones, and we are used to hear songs in English, but in my opinion that is more a feeling than a fact. That is said by a person who hears a lot of English music and like English very much, too. I love studying languages, it's wonderful now that you can talk to people from many different countries. <br /><br />English is quite useful, and I learned a lot about it playing abandonware :P when I was very, very young (yes, Rafa, when I was young and healthy xDD). I asked my brother the meanings of every word I saw in games like Sid meier's Civilization when I was hardly able to read in Spanish xD
<p>Chinese? Noooo,*it hasn't*future, it's not an extended language. People in China need to learn english if they want to communicate with the rest of the world.</p>
SLKER
27-08-2006, 15:52:50
Chinese is the most*spoken language. And I don't care if that's only because there are 1000 millions of Chinese people xD If China becomes the super-important nation it aims to be, you will have to learn chinese*like you learn english now (which means, no problema, in Spain we won't*learn a shit about it xD)
<p>The increment of China's population will help english language, and not his own language, because they have to learn english if they want to communicate with other people.</p>
<p>If the increment*were produced in Spain, all would be different, because spanish language is extended, and we can carry on without speaking english. Yes, we would have to learn english anyway, but we aren't as needed as chinese people are.</p>
rafafreak
27-08-2006, 16:23:25
<p>XDD That's right. It doesn't even matter for Spain lol.</p>
<p>I think chinese will have more problems if they want to install the idiom, foremost in Europe, where a lot of languages are coexisting, some wich countries are narrow minded to changes. What is more, think you have to write in a different alphabet. In any case, if China aims to keep growing, who knows...</p>
46118
27-08-2006, 22:09:37
<p>That's exactly what I'm talking about. Last year I read in a magazine that China was having more incomings per month than the United States, and China is growing economically every day!. So it's going to be very important for countries to be able to establish a commerce with China.</p>
<p>*Let's put an example to make it clearer. Argentina for example. Imagine that Argentina starts exporting(I don't kno if this word even exist but, I think you understand what I mean) goods to China. There are more than 1.3 billion Chinese people(1 billion=1000 millones), so it would be a great deal for the country. It would help a lot to our economy!. It's not as important for China to commerce with us, as it is for Argentina to commerce with them. And that applies to most countries so.......why would the chinese people keep studying english, french, or any other language when it's a profitable way of earning money to the others countries??.</p>
<p>They can establish his business in China, what's the problem of the language in this case? I don't understand, what do you want to say?</p>
<p>Most people in China are used to talk in English if they need to communicate with a foreigner. You don't have to learn chinese (or any other language) if you want to go to China (or any other country), and this is the reason why chinese would never be extended.</p>
46118
28-08-2006, 00:11:23
<p>No........you are so wrong. I'm sory to tell you that except from Beijing thear in China they don't speak not even a little of english. A friend of mine went there with his father 3 times, and a friend of my father went thear too and he travel all through* China and both told me that, except when they where in Beijing, they had to use body-languaje in order to find whatever they want!</p>
<p>So I think that if China keep growing like this it would be very important this language!</p>
<p>Perhaps the situation is changing... now they have to change in order to establish relations with the rest of the world. At least the "important" part of China (industrialized one).</p>
<p>Chinese has no future :-)</p>
46118
28-08-2006, 00:56:20
I'd be very happy to hear that if it true....but I think we all know that they have a lot of future. They work a lot, they are very smart. Every time I read in a magazine about a phisycs or maths competition they said that it is very impressive to see that the Chinesse finish the test in an hour and a half while it takes to everyone else like 6 hours......and they always get medalls, so.........we'll have to admit that they are going, sory, they are a very important country. China is one of the most powerful countries nowadays!
<p>Yes, but I'm talking about chinese language ¬¬</p>
<p>They may have future, but... in english. However, I don't think so... I think you are confusing China with Japan... people in Japan are smarter than in China, they have a better (and restrictive) educative system.</p>
Echi44
28-08-2006, 02:17:05
i never thought i would say this, but cnl is right, the chinese language will stay in china. My brother is in the navy here, and next year is going to china for some kind of specialization in telecom., but in order to do that, he has to reach an english level of at least 50%. Besides, last year a representation of a chinese company came (selling i don't know what to the venezuelan navy) and they communicate purely in english. So i think that, if u r not planning moving in to china, learning english will do just fine xD

<span class="postbody"> Una carta de una unidad multinacional a todos sus miembros DE HABLA HISPANA <br /> <br /> To: All Spanish Members <br /> <br /> Several visitors to our office have brought to our attention that <br /> our <br /> Spanish-speaking employees commonly use offensive language. Such <br /> behavior, in addition to violating firm practices, is highly unprofessional, <br /> offensive both to visitors and employees, and will not be tolerated. <br /> <br /> Therefore, we have decided to implement a series of rules in our <br /> office and would expect them to be applied. It is expected that ALL employees immediately adhere to these rules: <br /> <br /> 1- Words like coño, carajo and other such expressions will not be used <br /> for emphasis, no matter how heated the discussion may get. <br /> <br /> 2- Non important matters should not be addressed to as jilipolleces. <br /> <br /> 3- You will not say la cagó when someone makes a mistake, or se cagó <br /> en su madre if you see someone being reprimended. All forms and derivatives of the word cagar are inappropriate in our environment. <br /> <br /> 4- Lack of determination will not be referred to as falta de cojones <br /> or mariconerías, nor will a person with lack of initiative be referred <br /> to as cagón, mamón or comemierda. <br /> <br /> 5- No Manager or Supervisor, under any circumstances, will be referred to as hijo de puta, ese cabrón, or ese maricón. <br /> <br /> 6- When a good proposal is presented, the term esto está de puta madre <br /> must not be used. <br /> <br /> 7- Unusual or creative brainstorming meetings will not be referred to as <br /> pajas mentales. <br /> <br />8- Do not say como jode if a person is persistent, or se jodió if somebody is going through a difficult situation. Furthermore, you <br /> must not say qué jodienda, or esto está del carajo when matters become <br /> complicated in your line of work. <br /> <br /> 9- When asking someone to leave you alone, you should not say vete <br /> pa'lcarajo, nor will you substitute: ¿qué carajo quieres? for "may I help <br /> you?". <br /> <br /> 10- When leaving the office, using the term me voy pa'l carajo is not <br /> proper. <br /> <br /> 11- When any office equipment fails, it must be reported as "it broke <br /> down", not se descojonó, or se jodió la mierda esta. <br /> <br /> 12- Last but not least, after reading this memo, please do not say me <br /> voy a limpiar el culo con esto. Just keep it clean and file properly. <br /> <br /> Thank you for your cooperation</span>

<p>About the l33t speak (or leet speak): <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet</a>.</p>
<p>Is very popular on the internet and chats, but is a very bad english practice, and sometimes, very hard to understand*:(</p>

<p>I'd asked again........how the hell did you make to find so many movies there???</p>
<p>*I couldn't even found one.(there are many that seems very easy but I can't give with their names!!!)</p>
mirielles
20-10-2006, 21:33:53
<p>I understand that some people like leet, but to me is like using a (communication) tool that* "un-helps". It takes longer to type and read! Or maybe I'm jut not used to it.</p>
<p>-----<br />Keep working on the game! :D<br />When you finish, it shows you the hall of fame.* Looks like a lot of people cheated... because there's no way, <strong>no way </strong>they beat it in less than 2 minutes! :P</p>
<p>P.D.:<br />46118, what do you mean, not even one?</p>
Japofran
20-10-2006, 23:35:07
The idea about leetspeak is that if you use it you're 1337 or 31337 (leet or eleet), that is, "elite". It was created by hackers --hence the numbers instead of letters-- and its only use is boasting. Every time I run into some leetspeak I've got to check a proper dictionary:
<p>http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=leetspeak
<p>Although by now I've already learnt some of its basic words.

22-10-2006, 03:24:09
I know it sounds very strange but it's true......I tried a few that I though I knew but no.....I was wrong. I don't know. I have to say, in my defence, that I tried for 5 minutes only and I stopped..(it was very frustrating not to be able to find the movies when everyone else did!!!)
aldana_
23-10-2006, 05:24:46
well some are very easy..* just write what you see... you wont go wrong!!<br /><br />and others you have to make a relation betwen some thing you see in there... or conect words....<br /><br />and others more difficult are more about the film.. and makes you think...<br /><br />But there's always an object in there that is part of the title...<br /><br />well... more help than that i can't give... otherwise i'll be giving you the answers.. hehehe** :P<br /><br />mm.. i'm in 16... it's sucks not being able to guess more!!!!! ¬¬<br />How on earth did you find all 50??!!!* :O
mirielles
23-10-2006, 18:11:14
<p>First try: I got less than twenty and said "I give up, it's impossible!"</p>
<p>Second try: I left the window open the whole day.* Even using the pause button, I beat it in 60 minutes or so. :P<br />I got stuck for a while with the children that are playing, the steps and with the huge baby.* But I got <strong>really </strong>stuck with the wolves. "Like, adventure game stuck."<br />I started typing anything that came to me then out of nowhere, I won! :)</p>
<p>Some of them are seriously old.* The one with the monster in the lake is in black and white, probably from the 50's.* So is the one with the woman and the babies (at least, the original) I think I haven't seen the rest of the old ones, I just know about them because of other movies and tv shows.</p>
<p>I'll give you a hint.* Hitchcock.</p>

mirielles
26-10-2006, 15:35:26
<p>Don't give up!</p>
<p>Let's see.* It's not the wolves.* It's not the number of wolves either.* It's what they are doing. "The ______"<br />The same with the children. What are they doing?<br />The stairs, I just counted the steps and typed # steps. :P<br />The corn... it's hard to give a hint, I saw that movie and since it's the only one I know with "corn" in the title, it only took me one guess.</p>
<p>What goblin? who do you mean? the guy at the window that looks like Takko? (he's going to kill me!)<br />Or the guy at the trees, usually found at the end of a rainbow?</p>
<p>The guy in the lake it's a "creature". (In the movie, nobody knows what he is)* He comes from a special lake. :)</p>

I don't know how they do to translate film titles sometimes... Some translations make the titles lose any sense
martin_bfg10k
29-10-2006, 03:27:56
movie translations sux0rz some time. I prefer original titles.
46118
01-11-2006, 01:02:08
<p>the thing is that sometimes it's very difficult to translate the title of a movie to Spanish and to be able to keep the same meaning.......let's put an example!..."the inside man"........if you have to translate that you would say something like..."el hombre de adentro; el hombre infiltrado;etc"......but it has nothing to do with it and that's way they have to put.."el plan perfecto"........</p>
<p>but of course as you say....I'd prefer original titles!</p>
martin_bfg10k

<p>Yes.<br />Last night they where showing Ferris Bueller's Day Off.* Again.* I've seen it in english, with different sets of subtitles, and translated to spanish.</p>
<p>In the middle of Ferris' song, his friends are talking about what they're going to be. They always change Cameron's line! You know, what Ferris is going to be!<br />Last night the translation said "he's going to be a rock star"...</p>
<p>It's <strong>a fry cook in Mars</strong>!</p>
<p>But here's the world's worst case of title translation.</p>
<p>A*million years ago, when The Naked Gun came out someone decided it should be called "Y donde está el policía".* They're still using "Y donde está___" for comedies. What.</p>

I agree with you aldana, I think that a forum is a place to express the thoughts and feelings, and comunicate with other people, lately there's a rupture in that comunication, and i think it's because of the people that make meaningless posts. Sometimes I take a look on the topics and i can't post nothing, just because there's nothing interesting to say about the last messages... I guess we have to be patient and ignore those users and their posts

yeah.. it's quite late there....
Japofran
08-02-2007, 02:03:39
Here it's over 2 am. :S Funny thing is, my cycle seems to be nuts enough already, and the only reason seems to be that I hardly slept an hour or two last night because of today's exam. I took a nap on the afternoon but just another hour. So I can't sleep because I slept too little last night. o_O That's how it works for me, as soon as I get out of schedule, no matter how, I just can't sleep. :(
aldana_
08-02-2007, 02:08:04
yes. that happens to me too sometimes... i could spend a night without sleeping, and if it is day already i wont be able to sleep until the night around 11 at least... <br />i can't take naps... i've tried but i can't...<br /><br />And if i travel i don't sleep either...<br />once i spent 36 hours on a bus without sleeping, i arrived at my destination in the morning, so i didn't sleep 'til the night..<br /><br />Anyway... you have an exam today? how was it?
Japofran
08-02-2007, 02:40:17
It's fairly the same for me... I can take naps if I really need to but I don't use to nor like to. And the worse part is that napping during the day seems to keep me awake until long after I should be in bed, no matter how many hours have I slept per day altogether. Well I just have a tendency towards insomnia, it sucks big time but that's how it goes.
<p>During travels it's exactly the same, I can't possibly sleep while travelling, no matter how tired I am or what time is it.
<p>The exam was about a pretty stupid subject, not hard at all, should have passed. But as always I hadn't the time to finish all the questions and so my marks will suffer accordingly. It's stupid, most people never manage either to finish most exams here in Engineering. Okay the exams can't last longer than from 9 am to 2 pm, but if nobody can't finish the whole exam in that time they should simply make it shorter, shouldn't they? ¬¬ It's a hard career but, into the bargain, it's nearly impossible to get the highest marks because it's nearly impossible to finish the exam. The only time I got a distinction I hadn't managed to finish the exam and I got a 9.1 out of 10, which should be an A-, but I got the distinction because nobody had got higher than 9.1, and there were no mistakes in the part I had completed and it was all well explained. But why on Earth don't they make exams shorter!? ¬¬
<p>Ahem. :) Then on the late afternoon I had some sort of oral exam about a report I had done along with two other people. Looks like there are two ways I can work inside a team (at least if there isn't a boss clearly assigning tasks to each teammate): either other people volunteer to do everything before I've got free time to start; or I just can't rely on things getting done and I do everything on my own. This case was not quite but pretty much the second case, in the end it was up to me to put the report together in an acceptable way. That's more work but at least I feel better with myself. Plus I'm pretty good at making reports and stuff, things somewhere near real work, much better than studying for exams, I never get motivated for those, I wish I'm over with the career soon as planned. Well so good news is that the professor liked the report, the other teammates were somewhat clueless about much of its content but the professor didn't notice it. :)
<p>O my god, I can't believe I wrote all this, my schedule is really screwed up... :S Sorry if I bored you, your fault for reading it all. ;P

<p>Am i the only one who thinks that this HKNMTT user is just another pathetic creation, as "el regreso", of the real hakunamatata from some user that probably never met the real troll and that is trying*to make himself look good in front of him by "being polite" or something?</p>
<p>Or am i just a bit tired of this kind of people that i dont trust them at all and think something that might be wrong?</p>
<p>Anyway... i know i should be better than this and just ignore them.. but i've been on this web for 2 and a half years and this kind of user didin't used to be on the forum.. so now they get on my nerves a bit.... I apologise for this post.. i just wanted to let it out.. and i always do it best in english...*ok.. maybe not, but*i just like to do it in english...<br /><br />-------------------------------------<br />Changing subject again....</p>
<p>I started reading a book in english for my english class. It's called "Time to kill" by John Grishman.. Did someone read it?<br />It appears to be a good book, but i must say,.. the way it starts shock me a lot!!.. :-|</p>
<p>Anyway... i think that's all i have to say for now.. hehe...<br />See you guys!! :-)</p>

He's a troll, he needn't have a reason to hate, if it didn't act this way he wouldn't be a troll. Of course the best thing is to ignore trolls, but I only wanted to say that you shouldn't let these things affect you in the least, there are trolls in each and every forum, it's something you have to live with just like taxes. Just consider that you hang out over here precisely because the positive things outweight the negative ones, if not you would simply withdraw.

hai guys. I never knew this thread existed, and stuff <.<
So yeah, I apparently got to a point of duality between english and spanish that makes me be able to read something perfectly in english, and then remeber it as if I had read it in spanish. Like this one website with some calculator's instructions I found and then linked to a classmate. She was like "eh... it's in English", and me was like "... I hadn't noticed at all O.o"
My speaking skills suck, though. As in, Being fluent with a language isn't good when you can't make people understand you due to crappy pronunctiation xD
Reviving threads for the win, too xD

haha yes, I know what you mean. It´d happened to me too!
Did you get to dream in english yet? i did, once.. i woke up laughing my heart out. I couldn´t believe it.. hahaha
I suck at my speaking skills too!! don´t worry! haha
I think i can write engish pretty well, but when i have to talk, i´m a real mess!! It´s like i have a potato in my mouth!! haha..
I need a lot more practice to be a fluent speaker.

I need a lot more practice to be a fluent speaker.
Well, the way I managed to become fluent as in not stop in the middle of a sentence going like "wait, what's the word I want to use here?" were some random conversations in the messenger with too many people who talked too quickly. After a while I managed to follow their conversation AND 'speak' in them. Pronunctiation isn't helped by the internet ways, though xD
As for writing.. I'm trying to translate this weird thing I wrote into english, and daaamn it's more complicated than I expected <.<

As for writing.. I'm trying to translate this weird thing I wrote into english, and daaamn it's more complicated than I expected <.<
well... translating can be tricky... You have to have in account that english and spanish don't always have the same grammatical structure. So, to translate what you wrote in spanish, you have to think of an enslish way to say it. Translation "word-by-word" is not alway the best choice.. Sometimes you have to change the structure or use dome known slang..
Hope you did it well though!
You seem to know a lot about english so i'm sure you must have translated it right.. :)
Should we talk about the Weather?
Well, let´s see.. in my city it is horribly humid and hot... so you can guess that i´m not enjoying my summer as i´ll wish...
BUt from time to time, a little soft cold wind blows and the days is more than perfect...
I do like those days to lay in the sun, get in the pool, and drink some cold refreshing "tereres"!! hehe... :)
About over there? Are you on vacation already? I still have one more week until i can drop all the books and sleep all day. haha...
